Evapotranspiration

Evapotranspiration is the combined process by which water moves from the land surface into the atmosphere. It includes two linked actions: evaporation, where moisture on soil, puddles or other exposed surfaces turns into vapor, and transpiration, in which plants draw water up through their roots and release it through tiny openings in their leaves. Together these pathways account for a large share of the fresh water that returns to the sky each day.

The importance of evapotranspiration lies in its role as a bridge between the terrestrial water stored in soils and vegetation and the atmospheric moisture that drives weather patterns. By moving heat along with water, it influences local temperature, humidity, and even the formation of clouds and precipitation. In practical terms, understanding how much water is lost through this process helps farmers manage irrigation, assists engineers designing drainage systems, and informs climate scientists modeling drought risk.

You encounter evapotranspiration whenever you think about any landscape where plants grow and soil is exposed to sun and wind – from a backyard garden to an extensive agricultural field, from a forested watershed to an urban park. In each of these settings the balance between incoming rain or meltwater and the amount lost by evaporation and transpiration determines how much water remains in the ground for ecosystems and human use.
