Flavoprotein

A flavoprotein is a protein that carries one of the vitamin‑derived molecules called flavins as a tightly bound cofactor. The flavin sits in a pocket of the protein and can accept or donate electrons during chemical transformations, making the whole assembly an efficient catalyst for oxidation‑reduction reactions. Because the flavin itself can change its electronic state while staying attached to the protein, flavoproteins are able to shuttle electrons repeatedly without being consumed.

These enzymes play central roles in many vital biochemical pathways. In cellular respiration they help transfer energy from nutrients into usable forms, while in photosynthetic organisms they capture light and convert it into chemical reducing power. Human health also depends on flavoproteins; defects in several of them are linked to metabolic disorders, and their activity influences drug metabolism and the body's response to oxidative stress.
