Optical Frequency Comb

An optical frequency comb is a light source whose spectrum consists of many discrete, very narrow lines that are evenly spaced in frequency, much like the teeth of a comb. The spacing between the lines is fixed and stable, so each line can be thought of as a known marker on an otherwise continuous optical scale. By counting or referencing these markers, scientists can translate measurements made at one wavelength into precise values at another, effectively turning an optical ruler into a set of exact steps.

The importance of this tool lies in its ability to link the incredibly high frequencies of visible and infrared light with the much slower radio‑frequency domain where electronic counters are most accurate. This bridge enables ultrahigh precision in timekeeping, spectroscopy, and distance measurement, allowing clocks that keep time to within a fraction of a second over the age of the universe and enabling the detection of tiny shifts in molecular fingerprints for fundamental physics or biomedical diagnostics. Optical frequency combs appear in laboratories that build atomic clocks, in fiber‑optic networks that distribute precise timing signals, and increasingly in portable devices that need exact measurement of light frequencies, such as environmental sensors and telecommunication equipment.
