Solid‑oxide Cell
A solid‑oxide cell is an electrochemical device that uses a dense ceramic electrolyte to conduct oxygen ions at high temperature, typically six hundred to eight hundred degrees Celsius. In fuel‑cell mode the cell draws in a fuel such as hydrogen or natural gas, splits it into electrons and ions, and lets the electrons travel through an external circuit to produce electricity while the ions move across the solid electrolyte to combine with oxygen on the other side. In electrolyzer mode the same structure runs backwards: electricity is applied, oxygen ions are forced in the opposite direction, and a fuel such as hydrogen or synthesis gas is generated at the outlet.
