Supramolecular Protein Filament

A supramolecular protein filament is a long, ordered chain made up of many identical or related protein molecules that bind together side‑by‑side and end‑to‑end. Each individual protein unit, often called a subunit, repeats in a regular pattern so that the whole assembly extends like a thin thread, ranging from just a few nanometres to several micrometres in length. The term supramolecular emphasizes that the filament’s stability comes not from covalent bonds within each protein but from weaker forces—hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic contacts, and ionic interactions—that hold the subunits together in a cooperative fashion.
